St. Paul, MN Dentist Compares EndoSequence Tech to Other Root Canal Tools

Posted in Dentistry Article by minneapolisdentist on August 10, 2009

August 10, 2009 — ST. PAUL, MN — Root canals, or endodontic therapy, is an enigmatic treatment. Although root canals preserve the natural tooth while removing any infectious cells, the treatment has been beleaguered by references to painful procedure and complications. Due to these factors, dentists have begun recommending the alternative to root canals, dental implants, to patients. Fightingback, root canal treatment has taken a leap in technology, providing efficient and predictable treatment while preserving the natural tooth.

“Many of the old tools used for root canals have simply become outdated,” said Dr. Walter Hunt, a leader in the St. Paul, Minnesota dentistry community. “Because of the tools, dentists started to lose stock in root canals. There were just so many complications to consider, and dentists started to prefer removing the infected tooth rather than trying to restore it, which is a shame.”

EndoSequence, a fourth generation endodontic file provided by Brasseler USA, provides many of the answers endodontists have been looking for. Some problems dentists face when using dental files include errant filing (transporting) of the root canal, filing “suck down,” debris accumulation, file separation, file tip breakage, and file stripping. EndoSequence manages to sidestep these hazards with its unique architecture and durable nickel titanium composition said Dr. Hunt.

“Since I started using EndoSequence filing tools in my treatment, I have seen a drastic improvement in the outcome of root canals and less pain post-operation for my patients,” said the St. Paul, MN dentist.

According to a report conducted by http://www.cda.org titled, “Simplifying Endodontics With EndoSequence Rotary Instrumentation,” EndoSequence incorporates several design enhancements in its equipment to provide predictable, high-precision instrumentation. Its alternating contact point (ACP) file design keepsthe file centered in the canal while reducing torque from the dentist, which can contribute to several of the complications mentioned.

Also, EndoSequence benefits from electropolishing, which buffs out microcracks in the file structure and prevents fractures in the tool. This increases cutting effectiveness and greatly reduces the chances for tip breakage during procedures.

Lastly, the report claims that EndoSequence implements a non-cutting precision tip, allowing efficient filing and extraction of dental pulp matter from the tooth, providing a well-grooved canal for sealing.

According to the American Association of Endodontists (AAE), root canals are aprocedure in which the dentist or endodontist removes inflamed or infected dental pulp from inside the tooth. Then, the inside of the tooth is cleaned to prevent infection, and is filled and sealed. Dental pulp is soft tissue matter inside of the tooth’s root canal, and can become infected by anything from dental decay, a chip or crack in the tooth, or even repeated dental procedures. Without treatment, an abscess or inflammation will cause discomfort and possible systemic complications to other parts of the body.

“EndoSequence has been a great help in performing successful root canals time after time,” said Dr. Hunt. “It is critically important to fully extract dental pulp from the infected tooth before filling and sealing the tooth. If pulp is left in the tooth, or if the canals are not fully emptied, patients can experience relapses or prolonged discomfort after the operation.”

Dr. Hunt’s Minnesota practice, Personal Care Dentistry, performs many procedures including root canals. Personal Care Dentistry performs cleaning and protective services, orthodontics, crowns, filings, bridges, veneers, as well as cosmetic procedures for individuals looking for a St. Paul, Minnesota tooth whitening practitioner.

Minneapolis, MN top Dentist Looks Back on First Year with New Root Canal System

Posted in Dental Nesw by minneapolisdentist on August 10, 2009

August 10, 2009 — MINNEAPOLIS, MN — For the past year, best dental implant expert in Minneapolis, MN Dr. Walter Hunt has been using new equipment when performing root canals in hopes to improve the quality of care and patient comfort. After a full year, Dr. Hunt is celebrating the benefits of the EndoSequence system, and the benefits it brings to his patients.

“I read up on EndoSequence as much as I could before investing in the
technology,” said Dr. Hunt. “You can never be 100% sure what to expect from equipment until you actually use it, and the EndoSequence turned out to be a great upgrade to our root canal treatment and an asset to our practice.”

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), a root canal is a dental procedure that removes infected or diseased tooth matter to prevent or remove tooth decay. Prior to the invention of root canal therapy dentists were forced to remove infected teeth rather than disinfecting the tooth and restoring it. Removing the tooth and placing an implant works, but many patients do not want to lose their natural teeth for an implant said Dr. Hunt.

“Dental implants are great to restore the esthetics of a healthy mouth,” said Dr. Hunt, a Minneapolis, MN dental implants expert. “But, preserving the original tooth has its benefits, and EndoSequence makes the procedure reliable and predictable.

The past year using the technology has been great, and with this technology we look forward to providing a higher quality of care for our patients for many years to come.”

Dr. Hunt’s practice, Personal Care Dentistry, focuses on personal attention and attention to detail. The EndoSequence has is a great system for root canal procedures, and provides Personal Care Dentistry with yet another reason for patients to expect healthy teeth and excellent results from treatment said Dr. Hunt.

Magazine Names Minneapolis Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Walter Hunt To Its Top 100 List For Third Time

Posted in Uncategorized by minneapolisdentist on June 18, 2009

Wednesday, June 17, 2009 – MINNEAPOLIS AND ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA – Minneapolis Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Walter L. Hunt Jr.  of Personal Care Dentistry recently was named among the top 100 dentists by Minneapolis/St.Paul Magazine for the third consecutive time.

This designation joins another recent recognition- he also was named the best dentist in the “Roseville Review” in February for the eighth consecutive year, which is compiled annually by the Lillie Suburban newspaper.

The Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine list is compiled every other year.

“It’s flattering and humbling to be recognized on these lists,” said Hunt, a Minneapolis dental implants specialist. “As a professional, you strive to perform at the highest level, so it’s gratifying when others recognize you for your hard work.”

Clinic Administrator Jeanne Slanga said the staff at Personal Care Dentistry are proud of Hunt earning the recognition for his work.

“It makes me proud to be a part of Personal Care Dentistry,” Slanga said.

Dentists are named to the top 100 list in Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine based on nominations from dental hygienists and dentists in the Twin Cities area. Ballots are sent out to about 1,000 hygienists and about 2,000 dentists in the metro area.

Although some of those dentists might be considered competitors, many are specialists, including oral surgeons, endodontists and pediatric dentists whom Hunt refers patients to on occasion.

“Because of that, they get to see the work that we do,” Slanga said.

Hunt said it’s an honor to be voted to both lists, but for different reasons.

“The truth is that patients don’t know that you’re doing good work, they just know that you care about them,” Hunt said. “They are voting more on the personal aspect of our relationship with them.

Being voted on by other dentists is more of a professional honor.

“That they think highly enough of our practice to nominate us to such a prestigious list is quite a compliment,” Slanga said.

Minneapolis, MN Dentist Offers Dental Implants In One Visit

Posted in Uncategorized by minneapolisdentist on June 8, 2009

Monday, March 23, 2009— ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA — The traditional method of placing a dental implant is a lengthy process that takes up to six months to complete.

Minneapolis Dentist Dr. Walter L. Hunt has found a way to complete the entire process in one appointment that lasts about 45 minutes, through the use of immediate load implants.

To adequately understand and appreciate this accomplishment, it’s important to know how traditional implants work.

In the past when a patient lost a tooth or had to have it extracted and opted to have a dental implant and a crown put in its place, Hunt would send the patient to an oral surgeon to have a dental implant permanently placed into the jaw bone. This implant serves as an anchor.

Dental implants are made of titanium and they integrate themselves into the jawbone through a process called “osseointegration,” according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

The osseointegration process can take up to six months to complete. Once that happens, a follow-up procedure is required to expose the top of the implant so a post can be attached to it. This post serves as the support for the crown, which ultimately replaces the missing tooth.

Although Hunt values the work of oral surgeons, he said that through the years, he found that there sometimes was a disconnect between his aesthetic goals for his patients and the work provided by some oral surgeons.

The oral surgeon’s goal is to place the implant, but “they don’t have the big picture in mind, and they don’t always place the implant in an ideal location or at an ideal angle,” Hunt said. “This creates a situation where I can’t create the best aesthetics as I could if I had done the procedure myself.”

With the goal in mind of creating optimum results for patients, Hunt became an associate fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. To do that, he spent more than 600 hours of study during weekends over the course of 10 months while attending the New York University Dental School to learn to surgically place dental implants in his office.

“I wanted to make sure I had some credentials and experience before I started doing that,” he said, adding that he completed the training in May 2008.

Once he had this knowledge and experience under his belt, Hunt began performing the procedure in-house.

The key difference between immediate load and traditional implants is the shape of the implant, Hunt said. A traditional implant looks like a screw. The angles and thread design of immediate load implants enable them to withstand pressure immediately without having to wait for the bone to heal around it.

“Now we can do the surgery (to install the implant) and put the tooth on it all at once in a lot of cases,” he said. “The patient doesn’t have to endure six months of having a space in their mouth.”

Immediate load implants still integrate, as the bone heals around them and makes them stronger, Hunt said.

Offering the procedure in-house is a big change for Hunt, who had placed crowns over implants for 30 years before learning the surgical procedure of placing dental implants.

“Now patients don’t have to leave the practice to see an oral surgeon because everything is done in the office,” he said. “They are a lot happier and the cases have been successful.”
